  1. What is the application for our Lord’s symbolic self-description as “him who has the sharp, double-edged sword” in verse 12?
  2. Discuss the personal application of the words, “I know where you live“. How can those words addressed to the church in Pergamum encourage or comfort embattled modern believers?
  3. In verse 14 there are symbolic names that allude to personalities and events in the OT (Numbers 22-24; 25:1-2; 31:1-15). Timelessly considered, what amounts to “the teaching of Balaam” and how did this greedy false prophet manage to teach the Moabite king to seduce the Israelites in the wilderness? In what shape or form does this play out today?
  4. As we see God working in the lives of others historically, we are reminded of what Biblical principle and how does that principle affect believers today?
  5. What does the Lord have in mind in His choice of symbolism in verse 17 (“hidden manna”, “white stone with a new name inscribed on it”)?
