September 27th Sermon Discussion Questions

Even in the Darkness the Light Shines

  1. Discuss the timeless aspect of Jesus’ declaration in verse 52 that His captors were prevailing in their wicked intentions only because “this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
  2. In verses 54-62 Luke recounts the fulfillment of Jesus’s earlier prediction that, as things went down, Peter, instead of manning up to the moment, would succumb to carnal fears and actually deny Jesus three times before the cock crowed. Other than just ‘completing’ the story, what is the timeless significance of this fulfillment? I.e., There is a theme embedded in this narrative, a motif that runs through all the Scriptures. What is it? Why should that pervasive note or theme motivate us to saturate our minds with the Scriptures?
  3. Today in his message, as a side note, the pastor mentioned what he termed, “the theology of unbelief,” a mindset regnant in our more and more secular and religiously hostile society. He summarized its three tenets. Do you recall what they were?
  4. Until the very end Jesus was always “coy” about openly declaring Himself the Messiah or God’s Son. Why? How can we refute those who claim Jesus never made such a claim?
