Let’s get your family together and continue our journey through the Westminster Confession (for this devotion, you will need your Bible):
Remember how in our last devotional, we talked about planning a trip? Well, how you get from point A to point B is by traveling (hopefully) in some sort of vehicle. I can think of many memories that I have in the family car during these trips. Aaahhhh, my brother’s perpetual inventing of songs, the ABC game, the license plate game, the smells, the old french fries between the seat cushions, even the VCR and CRT TV in the old conversion van we would take on these trips—what memories! Today we are going to learn that God’s people serve as the vehicle we are in to arrive at the destination!
Let’s start by reading Ephesians 3:1-13 together. God chose His people through Abraham to bring Jesus into the world. And it is through Jesus that all of God’s plans find their answers. In Jesus, God crushes sin and Satan, and through Jesus the Kingdom of God has its forever King! Only by uniting yourself to God’s people do you get to be a part of this. Paul tells us that the riches of Christ were a mystery hidden through the Old Testament church, while the New Testament church reveals this mystery to the world in the preaching of the Gospel!
But wait a minute, does that mean that I can only get to heaven by going to a church? Well, no… and yes! When you unite yourself to Jesus (the ONLY way to be saved), you unite yourself to His people! This is kind of like getting in the car to go on the vacation, if you aren’t in the car (part of the family) you don’t get to go on the vacation! Only Jesus can save us, but only Jesus’ people preach and teach and spur us on toward Him. A healthy Christian wants to surround themselves with God’s people!
Let’s close our devotional time by reading Hebrews 10:19-25. The Church is Jesus’ bride and His idea. We cannot love Him and avoid His people.
- Watch and learn to sing O Church Arise together.
- Pray for the membership of Lake Bible Church today. Maybe take out your directory and pray for the people on one page as a family. These are the people “in the car with us!”
