The Wages of Sin

Let’s take a moment to have some fun with legos. Let’s build a magnificent tower together, or an ornate palace. Once we’re finished, we are going to see what happens when we drop this weighty ball on it. [Destroy the tower with gusto] Did you see that one coming?!?! Actions have consequences. If you poke a bull in the eye, what will the consequence be? If you grab a dog by the ears, what will the consequence be? Did you know that the Bible teaches us that our sin has consequences?

Let’s start by reading Romans 3:23 together. The Bible tell us here that everyone has sinned and has fallen short of the glory of God. That’s true. I’ve only ever ran into a couple people who believe that they don’t sin, but almost everyone believes that their sin is not that big of a deal. But you see, the Bible teaches us here that we fall short of God’s glory…this means that our sin is a big deal! We don’t do what we were created for—to show his glory. Doing the opposite of what we were created for is going to have consequences.

So let’s turn now to Romans 6:23. What are the wages or the consequences of our sin? Death! And this is not just a physical death, but a spiritual one of separation from God for eternity. THAT is a BIG deal. But God does not leave us hopeless. The second half of Romans 6:23 gives us great hope and joy: “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We don’t have to be separated from God by a spiritual death, but we can have forever life with Him in Jesus!

Let’s praise God that though we are deserve death, Jesus has suffered the penalty for our sin so that we might have His life!
