We are Responsible

Let’s get your family together and continue our journey through the Westminster Confession (for this devotion, you will need your Bible, some candy, and some spinach):

What is a choice? It is the ability to pick an option or an action based on your wants and your knowledge. So I have here in my left hand some candy and in my right hand I have a bowl of spinach. You can have whichever one you choose. What are you gonna pick? I thought you would pick the candy! What are some choices that we make every day? We might not even realize we are making choices. Today we are going to hear how God gave His people a choice: to follow Him or to follow their own bellies.

Let’s start by reading Deuteronomy 30:15-20 together. God choose to redeem the world through His people Israel. And when we see them here in Deuteronomy, God has saved them from slavery in Egypt and has brought them to the border of their new home in Canaan. But God tells them that they have to choose between obeying Him and being a light to the world, or to disobey Him and be just like the world. He tells them that they are responsible for whatever they choose, and that it is a matter of life or death! This is a lot more serious than choosing between spinach or candy.

Why is it death to choose sin? Remember Adam and Eve in the Garden? God was the giver of life. They did not create themselves (Psalm 100:3). This means that if we walk in His Word we are walking in Life-Giving words, but to reject these Words is to choose the opposite of life… Death! It’s like choosing not to breathe. Sure, you can do that for a little bit but you cannot do that for long! We were made for God (1 Cor. 6:13) and so we must walk in His Word. To choose anything else is to choose death, and God tells us that we are responsible for the choice that we make.

Let’s praise God for being the source of all life!

Reaction Activity

  • Let’s sing The Christian’s Daily Prayer together as a family.
  • Let’s see who can hold their breathe the longest. Did you really want air as you held your breathe longer? Did you know that our soul needs God even when we disobey Him?!?
  • Thank God for giving us the freedom to choose right or wrong. Ask Him to give us strength to choose the Right thing He has told us in His Word!
